The Ignoring God

28 11 2009

He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, even his prayer is an abomination. (Proverbs 28:9)

Have you considered that God might be ignoring you because you are ignoring Him?

I’m not suggesting that God is oblivious to your needs.  This would be along the lines of heresy.  I believe that God is omniscient.  But what if God pays as much notice to your prayers as you give to His law?  What if there is a direct correlation between the attention you give to God’s law and the attention He gives to your prayers?

But God is not like us. He is perfect and gracious.  His mercies are new each morning.  If He counted sins who could stand in His presence (see Psalm 130)?  However, this Proverb gives little assurance for the person with a lifestyle of forsaking God’s law.  Such a person should expect to be ignored.

In the end no one who ignores God should be surprised if God turns him loose to pursue his own godless interests.  He should not cry foul on the day God gives him exactly what he longed for in life – total separation from his Creator.

It has been said, “ignorance is bliss”, but can this be appropriated to God?  Aren’t some things big enough, and important enough, that ignorance or indecision is not a viable option?  What if in ignoring God you are ignoring your only hope?

The ignoring God promises to turn an attentive ear to your prayer if you will only turn to Him.  He will be gracious.  He will hear.

Are you listening?

Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so short that it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood. (Isaiah 59:1-2)
